Road Trip, Day 27
Nebraska, Iowa An uneventful driving day. We broke 7000 miles [actually 8000 -- I accidentally misplaced 1000 miles somewhere between Utah and Arizona]. We spent the time listening to books on CD, and stopped somewhat early, only because we couldn't see getting good or easy lodging the closer we get to Chicago. With any luck and a bit of endurance, we could get back tomorrow, a day early.
We started out late. I'd forgotten to change the computer time zone, so while I thought it was only 20 after midnight, it was in fact almost 2 in the morning (isn't it neat how that works? Not the time zone stuff, the relative perception) when I went to sleep. We got up around nine, remembering in the shower that the motel had free breakfast, but only till 9:30. So we rushed over there. They had a great spread, cereal, muffins, bagels, they even had a waffle maker. Even though we were trying to rush, people kept arriving long after us, and long after 9:30. Anyway, we ate a lot, got on the road just around 10, and then stopped at some tourist trap "museum" gift shop of Buffalo Bill Cody, who apparently lived in North Platte when he organized his Wild West show.
Then it was drive, drive, drive. We weren't hungry for lunch, thanks to the big breakfast, so we just sort of had snacks on the road. We decided not to bother with Budget, since the car was fine now, we had a new tire, paid for by them, done by their approved agent, so we'll just deal with whatever needs to be dealt with when we return the car. Waste no time, don't have to switch cars or whatever.
A Motel 6 in Davenport, right at the end of Iowa, we figured would be the best lodging. We even took a dip in the pool, even though summer is really kind of over over here. Ah well. Let's see how it goes tomorrow. The GPS says it's just under 12 hours as the crow flies all the way back. (view pictures)
