Road Trip, Day 12

Canyonlands

We left the motel this morning around 9:40. We weren't in any particular hurry. I checked my email, fixed a few things on this site...

We drove out to Canyonlands, which is on the other side of the road from Arches, only it's then a further 25 miles to the park entrance. We did a leisurely trip through the park, driving down all the roads and stopping at all the stops. We did a few of the shorter hikes. If you have any vertigo, like I do, then this park is a rush, as you can walk right up to the edge of these sheer cliff drops. Don't get too carried away framing a photograph, or you'll walk right off the edge. Fernanda didn't think Canyonlands was as exciting as Arches. I find Canyonlands very exciting, but then that might just be cheap adrenaline thrills talking.

We were finished by 3:30, and eagerly drove back to the motel pool. It was nice taking an early afternoon and just relaxing by the pool. Too bad the wifi doesn't reach to the pool.

We went out for dinner at an italian place with a nice patio, but higher prices than the other places we've been to. The experience was marred by them trying to stick in the gratuity for you at an 18% rate, "is that OK?" No, it isn't! This whole tipping thing in America is a huge pain in the butt. Don't make ME pay YOUR wait staff! If it's a tip, it shouldn't feel obligatory. If it's obligatory, regulate and regularize it, like they do in Europe. This system just sucks. And it sucks especially here in Moab, with lots of foreigners passing through. You can look at it from two angles: 1) they are trying to rip off the foreigners by putting a way too high gratuity in automatically, or 2) they get stiffed a lot by foreigners not knowing America has a stupid system in place and not tipping. Either way, the solution lies in getting rid of this stupid system!

After dinner we went to the local drug store to try and find a non-slip dashboard pad for the car like you always see but never buy, except when you want to by one, then you never see it. This drug store had everything, except for this pad. They had camping supplies, lamp oil, t-shirts, socks -- lots of cool stuff. Then we went to the supermarket to restock our supplies. Now I'm sitting outside the motel room, because the wifi connection is better here, trying to catch up writing captions for all these photos.

Tomorrow it's off to Arizona and the Grand Canyon.
