Road Trip, Day 21

The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill

San Francisco

Today we've put the fewest miles on the car so far -- if we didn't have to find a new parking space this morning it would have been zero.

We bought three-day MUNI passes which let us ride the buses, the street cars and some subway, I think. Turns out there are two public transportation systems, BART and MUNI. MUNI is the one that runs the cable cars, so we got that. We spent the day riding the cable cars (when they would stop and let us on -- too many damn tourists) and doing tourist things.

Let's see, we started out with breakfast with Saroj at this place called Orphan Andy's, very friendly, very nice local color -- our waited sniffed that he didn't know what was becoming of the neighborhood because there were some people with kids in the place (but he did have a very friendly conversation with them) -- good food, fresh squeezed orange juice. Saroj is very proud of living on Castro St., right in the heart of the hip, happening, very gay section of San Francisco; the place is hopping all night long -- it's a good thing I'm so exhausted by the time I go to bed, otherwise I'd never fall asleep here.

Saroj had to fly out somewhere for work today, so she dropped us off at Telegraph Hill after driving us down curvy Lombard St. We climbed up and down Telegraph Hill, and got to see the wild parrots. Then we made our way toward the Fisherman's Wharf area. We walked through all the shops and stuff on Pier 39, saw the sea lions that come to the harbor there to haul out (very loud, all that barking). Then we went to buy our cable car passes, but first we stopped in a store that had stuff from around the world and were very impressed with selection. They had all kinds of cookies and candies from Germany. They even had Boylan root beer, which just happens to be made the next town down from Hackensack in NJ. It was like National Wholesale Liquidators, only better.

Then we rode around on the street cars. We went to Chinatown, rode the street cars some more, finally came back to Saroj's around 8:30, had some left-over chinese from yesterday, and walked out to explore nearby (in theory) Haight-Ashbury. In theory because I guided us around the wrong side of a hill on the way there, so it took a while. But we walked through some nice neighborhoods, nice houses, all way more than you could ever afford, all nice and neat and clean and quiet before we eventually got to the hip hot happening Haight-Ashbury area. Then we took the bus back to Castro St., where it is much more hip and happening and loud.

Tomorrow more San Francisco. We might rent bikes!
