Road Trip! Day 1
Through Pennsylvania Into Ohio So today we embark upon our road trip -- California and back or bust! -- for the next month. I slept badly so was grumpy all day. From my parents' house we picked up the rental car -- our home for the next month -- in Delaware. We have a Chevy four-door Cobalt with Delaware tags. It's automatic, and even though it is the "economy" rental car, the fuel display has it only getting 25 mpg -- boo! (Fernanda managed to boost that up to 28 mpg through good highway driving.)
By the time we get the car packed up and everything ready to go, it's already 2:30 in the afternoon. Oh well, first day and all, we weren't planning on going serious distance anyway -- just so long as we at least cross all of PA!
It was a beautiful day, and we decide to head out across Pennsylvania Dutch Country through Lancaster to the PA Turnpike. It was great. Relaxing and fun. The car CD player plays MP3 files (unlike our brand new Honda), so we popped in a disk of some 200 tunes, and were happy.
On across the Turnpike, pop in one of the many books-on-CDs we got from the library just before we left, past Pittsburgh and into Ohio, where at 8 o'clock with the gas tank nearly empty we stop for the night at an EconoLodge. The direction we go getting off the highway of course has no gas stations, and gets more and more middle of nowhere as we drive on on fumes before turning around and coasting into the motel. They tell us there's a gas station in three miles the other direction. I was anticipating problems like this, but not already in Ohio! Out in the middle of the desert, yeah -- last gas for 300 miles -- but not Ohio!
